Fun Stuff

US News and World Report Travel has a wonderful guide about fun stuff to see and do in Albuquerque. We heartily recommend checking out the original, but here are 3 highlights.

Old Town

Old Town

For more than 300 years, both Native American and Spanish cultures have been shaping this neighborhood (this is the site of the original city settlement). Anchored by the central plaza, Old Town's cobblestone streets pass brightly colored adobe huts than now house galleries, restaurants and souvenir shops. The stunning Church of San Felipe de Neri –Albuquerque's oldest building– can also be found here.

Many visitors recommend spending a few hours wandering around Old Town, likening it to a less-crowded (and more affordable) Santa Fe. However, if you're heading to Old Town in search of Southwestern souvenirs, recent shoppers recommend watching out for knock-offs.

Old Town sits just west of downtown Albuquerque. It's free to explore, however, recent visitors warn that many of the shops close their doors fairly early in the evening, so plan your trip accordingly. For more information, check out Old Town's official website.

Albuquerque Biological Park

Albuquerque Biological Park

Sitting along the Rio Grande River just southeast of Old Town, the Albuquerque Biological Park is the ideal venue for a day spent out of doors. This massive park is home to four distinct attractions: Albuquerque Aquarium, the Rio Grande Botanic Garden, the Rio Grande Zoo and Tingley Beach. The Albuquerque Aquarium is a particular hit with children thanks to its 285,000-gallon shark tank, while the Rio Grande Zoo's 200-plus species (lions, tigers and bears included) are sure to keep their attention. If you're not really interested in the animal kingdom, spend an afternoon exploring the 36-acre botanic garden, which features numerous exotic plant species, meticulously manicured grounds and serene walking paths. Enjoy the many opportunities to hike, bike and fish at Tingley Beach during a summertime visit.

To save money at each of these traveler favorites, one TripAdvisor user recommends purchasing the package deal, which grants you access to the zoo, the aquarium and the botanical garden; however, "you have to get there before 12pm to purchase it."

The Biological Park is open every day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. with extended hours during the summer season. Admission to the zoo, aquarium and garden is $12.50 for adults and $4 for children. Tingley Beach is free to visit. For more information, check out the Biological Park's website.

Sandia Peak Tramway

Sandia Peak Tramway

For excellent views of Albuquerque and the nearby Sandia Mountains, take a ride on the Sandia Peak Tramway. Cable cars carry passengers nearly three miles along a suspended cable between eastern Albuquerque and the 10,378-foot-high summit of Sandia Peak. Once at the top, visitors relish the views –which span 11,000 square miles on a clear day– not to mention some excellent hiking trails and, during the winter, snow-covered ski slopes. Sandia Peak's summit hosts several restaurants that offer dinner with a vista.

Recent riders agree that the tramway is a must-do for Albuquerque visitors. "If you're slightly afraid of heights it's a good way to get rid of the fear once and for all," writes one TripAdvisor user. "The view can only be described as majestic! Definitely a place to visit!"

The Sandia Peak Tramway runs every day from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., although hours may vary depending on the season. Rides cost $20 round-trip for adults, and discounts are available for seniors and children. For more information, check out the tramway's website.
